A-Ma Temple

A cornerstone of Macau’s cultural identity, the A-Ma Temple is the city's oldest and most revered Taoist complex, predating the arrival of the Portuguese. Built in 1488 to honor Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a breathtaking ensemble of prayer halls, pavilions, and courtyards carved into the rocky hillside of Barra Hill. Visitors wander through moon gates and past intricately carved stone lions, greeted by the heady scent of burning incense coils. The temple’s architectural harmony with its natural surroundings offers a serene glimpse into the spiritual heritage that gave Macau its name.
